Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen

Vintage Grand Prix at Watkins Glen

Watkins Glen International hosts the largest vintage racing weekend in the United States with more than 400 cars competing over the three days of September 11-13. As much as I love to watch these classic cars racing just as they did when they were new, I enjoy even more walking the paddock seeing teams break down a transmission or tune a suspension just moments before their race. These vintage racers are a combination of art, design, engineering, and raw horsepower like no other we see today.

Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival 2009

Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival 2009

Friday, Sept. 11. We leave work early, grab some takeout from Seneca Farms and then head down to The Glen for the 2009 Watkins Glen Grand Prix Festival. The town closes down Franklin Street and opens up the party to celebrate auto-sports history coming alive again. This year's featured marque - Morgan.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers

Each year, this time of year, I see beautiful sunflower fields in and around Vine Valley. I aim to photograph the fields but each year I wait too long--the first frost comes along and I loose my opportunity. So, shortly after the sun rose this morning, with just a half a cup of coffee in my veins, I drove up to the top of the valley and photographed these sunflowers growing on the Button Farm.

Farm stands

Farm stands

On a perfect August Saturday afternoon we hit the road in search of a bounty of fresh garlic. Off we went with a map of Yates County farm stands in hand and a GPS programmed to go. We picked up a little of something at each stop along the way until we reached our final destination... the Fox Run Winery Garlic Festival. Our pantry is now stocked with enough garlic to take us through the next year.
